Štúrovo – southern Slovakia

Štúrovo is the centre of southern Slovakia. It lies on the left bank of the Danube, at the southernmost and warmest tip of the Danube Lowlands.

About the town

A town on the Danube with a rich history

To the north-east of the town rise the Kováčovské Hills – steep cliffs of volcanic origin. The highest point in this unique nature reserve is the 395-metre-high Burda Hill.

In Roman times, the military camp of Anavum stood on the site of present-day Štúrovo on the Danube; in 1241, a fortress with a palisade, known as Parkán, was built here. During its long and turbulent history, the town’s name has changed a total of 25 times. Following the end of the Turkish occupation in 1683, the town became a free town under the name Parkán, but since 1948 it has been known as Štúrovo.

On the opposite bank of the Danube lies the town of Esztergom, the coronation city of the Hungarian kings of the Árpád dynasty, whose famous basilica, together with the castle, forms an unforgettable landmark of the entire region. Since 11 October 2001, Esztergom has been linked to Štúrovo by the reconstructed Marie Valérie Bridge, which serves as a border crossing.
