\u0160t\u00farovo \u2013 southern Slovakia<\/h1>

\u0160t\u00farovo is the centre of southern Slovakia. It lies on the left bank of the Danube, at the southernmost and warmest tip of the Danube Lowlands.<\/p><\/div><\/section>

About the town<\/span>

A town on the Danube with a rich history<\/h2>

To the north-east of the town rise the Kov\u00e1\u010dovsk\u00e9 Hills \u2013 steep cliffs of volcanic origin. The highest point in this unique nature reserve is the 395-metre-high Burda Hill.<\/p>

In Roman times, the military camp of Anavum stood on the site of present-day \u0160t\u00farovo on the Danube; in 1241, a fortress with a palisade, known as Park\u00e1n, was built here. During its long and turbulent history, the town\u2019s name has changed a total of 25 times. Following the end of the Turkish occupation in 1683, the town became a free town under the name Park\u00e1n, but since 1948 it has been known as \u0160t\u00farovo.<\/p>

On the opposite bank of the Danube lies the town of Esztergom, the coronation city of the Hungarian kings of the \u00c1rp\u00e1d dynasty, whose famous basilica, together with the castle, forms an unforgettable landmark of the entire region. Since 11 October 2001, Esztergom has been linked to \u0160t\u00farovo by the reconstructed Marie Val\u00e9rie Bridge, which serves as a border crossing.<\/p><\/div>
